Most home cooks use spices every day in their cooking but are they organized in a simple, easy-to-find system or do they fall out of the cabinet (like they do in my kitchen?)
To organize kitchen spices, keep the process simple. You just have to experiment to find out what system works best for you.
1. Take a few minutes to throw out any spices that are old and have lost their scent. Spices should be very fragrant when you take the cap off the jar. Or if you can’t remember when you purchased the spice – or if the humidity has turned the spice into clumps – then just throw it away.
2. Now choose where to store your spices. There are many modern-looking spice racks that sit right on your counter, over the door racks that fit a pantry door, and I’ve seen kitchen drawers fitted with some device that keeps the spices sorted.
Personally, I’m going to look for a lazy Susan that will fit my smallish spice cabinet.
3. The final touch is to just sort your spices. You can let the kids put them in alphabetical order or you can sort based on how frequently they are used.
Again, the choice is YOURS and if one way doesn’t keep your spices organized, then try something else.
Anything beats the falling-out-of-the-cabinet fiasco I currently deal with 😉
